Panthenol vs Hyaluronic Acid: Which One Does Your Skin Need?

Panthenol vs Hyaluronic Acid: Which One Does Your Skin Need?

Panthenol and hyaluronic acid both pull water into your skin, so neither is better across the board. Hyaluronic acid is the stronger water magnet and suits skin that looks flat and thirsty. Panthenol, or provitamin B5, is the gentler one that makes tight, uncomfortable skin feel soft and calm. Most people do best using both.

What is panthenol?

Panthenol is the form of vitamin B5 that goes into skincare. Your skin absorbs it easily and turns it into pantothenic acid, the vitamin itself. On the label you'll see it as panthenol or dexpanthenol, and in Korean products it's often called B5 on the front of the jar.

It's a humectant, which means it attracts water and helps the top layer of skin hold onto it. It has been used in creams for about 70 years. A 70th-anniversary review of topical dexpanthenol notes that studies keep confirming its moisturising and barrier-supporting role, and that it seems to keep the lipids in the outer layer of skin more flexible. The same review admits the exact mechanism still isn't fully worked out.

What you notice day to day is comfort. Skin that felt tight after cleansing feels softer, and a stressed, slightly flushed look tends to settle.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your body already makes. Most of it sits in the deeper layers of your skin, where it holds a large amount of water. A review in Dermato-Endocrinology calls it the key molecule involved in skin moisture because of how much water it binds and keeps.

You'll often read that it holds 1,000 times its weight in water. That number gets repeated a lot, but the review above doesn't give it, so read it as marketing shorthand. The useful part is simpler: on your face it sits on the surface and draws water in, so skin looks plumper and fine dry lines look softer for a while.

Formulas often mix several sizes of it. Larger ones stay on top as a light film, and smaller ones sit a little further into the surface layer. We go deeper on this in our hyaluronic acid hydration guide.

Hyaluronic acid draws water into the surface so skin looks plumper. Panthenol holds less water but leaves the surface feeling soft and calm. Used together, you get both.

Panthenol vs hyaluronic acid: what's the difference?

They're both water-binders, but they feel different on the skin and they're good at different things.

  • Hyaluronic acid is about volume of water. It's the one to reach for when skin looks dull, flat or crepey from dehydration.
  • Panthenol is about comfort. It holds less water, but it softens the surface and makes reactive, tight skin feel calmer.

Texture differs too. Hyaluronic acid can feel a bit tacky on its own, while panthenol usually feels smooth, almost silky.

If you're not sure whether your skin is short on water or short on oil, check our guide to dehydrated vs dry skin first. Both of these ingredients fix the water side, not the oil side.

Which is better, panthenol or hyaluronic acid?

It depends on what's bothering you.

  • Skin looks dehydrated and makeup sits in fine lines: hyaluronic acid first.
  • Skin stings, feels tight or looks a bit pink after cleansing or actives: panthenol first.
  • Both, which is common in an Australian winter or after a few days in air-conditioning: use them together.

Is B5 the same as hyaluronic acid? No. They're unrelated molecules that happen to do a similar job. Glycerin is the third one in this family, and we compare it in glycerin vs hyaluronic acid.

Can you use panthenol and hyaluronic acid together?

Yes, and plenty of products already do. Neither is an acid in the exfoliating sense, neither needs a special pH, and they don't compete. The hyaluronic acid brings in water and the panthenol keeps the surface feeling comfortable while it does.

The simplest way is one product with both. We stock a light B5 gel-cream whose label lists panthenol at 10,000 ppm alongside six forms of hyaluronic acid and ceramide NP. If you're using separate products, layer thinnest to thickest:

  1. Cleanse, and leave your face a little damp.
  2. Apply a hyaluronic acid serum or essence.
  3. Follow with a panthenol serum or cream.
  4. Seal with moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning.

That last step matters. Humectants work best when something on top slows the water from leaving again, which is why pairing hyaluronic acid with ceramide works so well.

How long should you wait before moisturiser after hyaluronic acid?

Not long. Give it 30 to 60 seconds, until it no longer feels wet, then moisturise. Waiting until your skin is bone dry defeats the point. In dry air, a humectant left uncovered has less water around it to pull from.

What should you not pair with hyaluronic acid?

Almost nothing clashes with it chemically. Retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide and exfoliating acids are all fine alongside it, and we cover the retinol pairing in our hyaluronic acid and retinol guide. The real mistake is using it on its own in dry weather with nothing over the top.

Is panthenol good for sensitive skin?

For most people, yes. It's one of the most common ingredients in creams made for sensitive skin, and it's usually very well tolerated.

It isn't risk-free, though. A 2026 review in Pharmaceutics points out that allergy to B5 is rare but may be under-diagnosed, especially in people with very reactive skin who use a lot of B5 products. If your skin reacts to things easily, patch test on your jawline for a few days first.

Can you use panthenol on your face every day? Yes, morning and night. It doesn't make skin more sensitive to the sun, and it works fine with retinol. Many people use it to keep their face comfortable while they get used to a retinoid.

If you only remember one thing: hyaluronic acid when skin looks thirsty, panthenol when it feels tight, and both when it's doing both. Put them on damp skin and keep a moisturiser over the top.

FAQ

Which is better, panthenol or hyaluronic acid?

Neither wins outright. Hyaluronic acid holds more water and suits skin that looks dehydrated and flat. Panthenol is gentler and suits skin that feels tight or looks a little stressed. Many people use both.

Is B5 the same as hyaluronic acid?

No. B5 is panthenol, a form of vitamin B5, and hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule. Both attract water to the skin, but they are different ingredients.

Can I use panthenol on my face every day?

Yes. Panthenol is gentle enough for morning and night use and doesn't make skin more sensitive to the sun. Patch test first if your skin reacts easily.

What should you not pair with hyaluronic acid?

Very little. Hyaluronic acid works alongside retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide and exfoliating acids. Just avoid using it alone in dry air without a moisturiser on top.

How long should I wait to put moisturiser on after hyaluronic acid?

About 30 to 60 seconds, once it no longer feels wet. Moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp so the water stays in.
