Glycerin and Squalane Together: Why the Pair Works for Dry Skin

Glycerin and squalane do different jobs, which is why they pair well. Glycerin draws water into the outer layer of skin. Squalane sits on the surface and softens it, so less of that water escapes. Layer glycerin first on damp skin, then seal it with a squalane moisturiser or oil.

What does glycerin do on its own?

Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts water. It is one of the most studied moisturising ingredients, and it is in a lot of the creams and serums you already own. The short version is that it helps skin hold more water in the upper layers, which is why dry skin can look plumper and feel less tight after it goes on.

The catch is that a humectant on its own can leave skin feeling a bit sticky or still slightly dry by afternoon if nothing sits on top. If you want the fuller picture on how it behaves, our guide to glycerin for skin, including safety and how to use it, goes through the details.

What does squalane add?

Squalane is a lighter, more stable form of squalene, a compound that is also found in human sebum. A 2012 review by Kim and Karadeniz lists skin hydrating and emollient activity among the reported effects of squalane, mostly from animal and in vitro work. In plain terms, an emollient smooths the surface and reduces how fast water leaves.

That is a different job from glycerin. Glycerin pulls water in. Squalane slows the loss. If you want the barrier side of this in more depth, our piece on squalane for the skin barrier covers what the evidence does and does not show.

Why use glycerin and squalane together?

Using both gives you a simple moisture sandwich. The humectant brings water up, and the emollient keeps it from leaving. That is the whole idea, and it is why so many gentle, well-liked moisturisers list glycerin near the top of their ingredients and add a light oil or squalane further down.

It also helps if you are not sure which one your skin needs. If your skin feels tight straight after cleansing, start with glycerin. If it feels fine after a splash of water but dries out by midday, add the squalane layer on top. People often mix these two up with glycerin and hyaluronic acid, but the jobs are different, and you do not need to pick one over the other.

What does the study on a hydrating layer show?

A 2017 randomised study by Milani and Sparavigna in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology tested a fluid with 1% hyaluronic acid and 5% glycerin on twenty healthy women, applying it to one forearm and leaving the other as a control. Skin hydration was measured with a corneometer at 1, 8 and 24 hours. Hydration rose by 59% at one hour, 48% at eight hours and 29% at 24 hours, compared with baseline.

Be careful with that result. It was a one-day trial on twenty healthy people, and it did not test squalane. What it does show is that a glycerin and hyaluronic acid fluid can raise surface hydration for longer than a few minutes. That is consistent with the way glycerin is supposed to work, but it is not proof that any routine will fix dry skin in a month.

How do you use them in a routine?

Keep it simple. Cleanse, then apply a glycerin serum or essence to slightly damp skin. Wait a minute or two, then add your moisturiser. If the moisturiser is a light cream, a few drops of squalane oil on top works too.

Do this in the morning and at night.

Use a thin layer. Glycerin at high strength can sting on skin that is already irritated or broken, so if it stings, wash it off and skip it for a few days. Squalane is generally described as light and non-greasy, but the evidence on whether it clogs pores in people is limited. If you are acne-prone, patch test on your jawline for a week before you use it across your face.

Where does our store product fit?

The Tenzero Age Solution Cream (50ml) on our store lists glycerin among its eight ingredients, alongside niacinamide and mineral oil. It does not list squalane. So if you buy it and want the pair, add a squalane oil over the top, or use a squalane-containing moisturiser after the cream at night.

That is the whole approach. The product does one job in the routine and the layering does the rest. Nothing here promises a change in how your skin looks in a set number of days.

FAQ

Can I use glycerin if my skin feels dry or tight?

Usually yes. Glycerin is a humectant that most people tolerate well. Start with a small amount on damp skin, and if it stings or feels worse, stop and patch test before trying again.

Is squalane good for dry skin?

It can help dry skin feel softer and look smoother because it is an emollient. It does not add water on its own, which is why it works best on top of a humectant such as glycerin.

Should I use glycerin or squalane first?

Glycerin first, on damp skin, then squalane or a squalane-based moisturiser on top. Applied the other way round, the squalane can sit on the surface before the glycerin has anything to pull water into.

Can I use glycerin and squalane every day?

Yes, for most skin types, morning and night. If your skin turns red, stings, or breaks out after a few days, reduce the amount or use it every other day and check with a pharmacist or dermatologist.
